What to do immediately after an attack — first aid, securing evidence, reporting.
A dog attack is a serious situation — both for you and for the investigation. Follow these steps in order:
1. First aid
If you are bitten, seek medical help immediately, even if the injury is only superficial. For deep wounds call 155. The doctor will decide about a rabies vaccination.
2. Call the emergency line
At the same time, call the emergency line 156. While an attack is under way, do not try to restrain the animal yourself.
3. Secure the evidence
- Memorise a description of the dog and of the owner.
- Take photographs of the injury (once it has been treated).
- Find witnesses and take their contact details.
4. Criminal proceedings
Depending on the extent of the injury, the case is usually assessed under public law pursuant to the Act on Certain Offences (No. 251/2016 Sb.) — specifically as a breach of a generally binding municipal ordinance (for example dogs running free under Section 4), as a minor offence against civil coexistence under Section 7, or as the criminal offence of bodily harm under the Criminal Code.
